San Carlos is an upper middle-class neighborhood in the eastern area of San Diego, California. It borders the neighborhoods of Del Cerro, Lake Murray, Tierrasanta, Navajo, Allied Gardens, the city of La Mesa and Mission Trails.

San Carlos is geographically defined largely by its proximity to Mission Trails Regional Park, and to the manmade reservoir Lake Murray. The area consists primarily of single-family homes.

Education

The neighborhood is served by the San Diego Unified School District. It contains Daillard Elementary School, Green Elementary School, Pershing Middle School, and Patrick Henry High School, which serves all three neighbouring communities of San Carlos, Allied Gardens, and Del Cerro.

The Del Cerro area was developed as a residential suburb during the 1960s and 1970s.[3]

The San Diego State University Master Plan[4] envisions a housing project for faculty and staff on university-owned undeveloped open space in Del Cerro (site of Adobe Falls,[5] a city historic landmark). The plan's Environmental Impact Report had been contested since 2005 through litigation brought by the Del Cerro Action Council, the City of San Diego, and others. On February 11, 2010 a judge issued a Decision in favor of SDSU, but the city appealed the denial of its writ and the case is now pending at the Court of Appeal.

The community includes the western end of Mission Trails Regional Park.
